Malaysian youths raised their voice online as schools across the country welcome the return of secondary form five and six students who will be taking their final exams soon.
Rallying behind the #SuaraPelajar (students voice) social media hashtag, students share their frustrations and concerns for their health, education and future as the nation continues to wrangle with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many confess their dread of returning to class with infection numbers still soaring.

Others expressed their anxieties of taking on their finals after what has obviously been an overwhelming school year.

Students also raised their concerns directly to the former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who claimed that he received over 200 messages from students who are worried about taking their exams.

School, studies, struggles and SOPs
Schools nationwide had basically closed twice in March and later in November 2020 as Malaysia faced the first and third wave of the pandemic. The Education Ministry (MOE) had also moved to cancel minor primary and secondary school exams and postponed 2020’s the major SPM and STPM finals exam.
Students, parents and teachers had to grapple and adapt with online learning sessions as well as confusing standard operating procedures (SOP) during the brief period schools reopened in July.
In January 2020, MOE made the decision to allow students who will take major examinations for 2020 and 2021 school sessions to return to face-to-face learning with more SOPs provided by the government.
However, students reveal that Covid-19 guidelines and SOPs set in place are already being ignored by some.
Hi I went to school today and there is no such thing as ‘sop yang lebih ketat’. The teacher said that if you get infected with COVID 19 , you won’t be able to sit for spm. This indicates that you won’t sit for your exam and there is no ulangan for us. #SuaraPelajar
