Netizens were angered and confused over a viral video of authorities reprimanding and issuing summons to people who allegedly violated Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) in Putrajaya.

Footage featuring what appears to be a public inspection on local business outlets have Malaysians questioning the details of official Covid-19 SOP.

The 56-second clip showed a police officer, who appears to be either an Assistant Commissioner or an Assistant Superintendent, checking in on the shops and its employees as well as advising members of the public to abide by Covid-19 guidelines.

The officer was also seen inspecting people’s mobile phones, presumably to look at their MySejahtera check-ins.

Netizens, however, focused their attention on statements made by the officer who apparently issued a fine to a woman believed to be a store clerk, for not wearing protective gloves.

The officer was seen questioning the lady – who looked visibly confused – why she didn’t have gloves on before handing over a ticket and listing her offences.

Not wearing gloves, right? Did not check the temperature, right?… So this summon is a reminder.

Gloves are not SOP

Based on our review of official Covid-19 SOP provided by the National Security Council (MKN), there is no mention of workers in the food, retail and service sector needing to wear protective gloves while on duty or it being against the rules to not wear them.

The issue even received the attention of Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who quickly came to clarify to the public that wearing gloves was not part of Covid-19 rules.
