Subang local Farah Daim is a freelance artist by day and Disney fan by night, and recently gained quite a bit of fame for reimagining her favourite Disney princesses in traditional wear based on different Malaysian states and also countries such as Singapore and Brunei.

When I watched Disney movies, I noticed some scenes or legends on film have similarities with our states, including Singapore and Brunei. I always love Disney movies and I also love traditional dress, I would definitely want to see them wear one, so I simply combined my two favorite things.

It took her around 3 months to complete all 17 drawings. While the outfits were of local Malaysian design, she kept in mind the princesses’ poses together with the patterns and colour schemes of their original designs.

Her collection included newer Disney princesses such as Anna and Elsa from Frozen, as well as classic Disney princessess like Cinderella and Pocahontas.

Farah notes that she will spend some time browsing Pinterest for clothing inspiration before she begins drawing.

While she drew many different designs, she also says that her drawing for Belle dressed in traditional clothing from Melaka is her favourite.

Her love for Disney and local tradition doesn’t stop there, as she has more projects in the works.

I would love to create comics using our very own 600 year-old legends and myth.
