How did it get here?
The subject of sugar baby and sugar daddies suddenly popped up earlier this February.
First came reports citing Seeking Arrangement claiming that Malaysia is home to 42,500 affluent “sugar daddies” – the third highest in Asia. Then, came an infographic released by Sugarbook listing down the Top 10 Sugar Baby Universities in Malaysia which sparked a firestorm online.
Sunway University, which was alleged to have the most number of sugar babies, released a statement condemning the information, while Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) lodged a police report denying the allegation.
Malaysiakini reports that some 74 police reports have been made against Sugarbook.
The Sugarbook website was also blocked earlier this week by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for violation of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA).
