A duo of local radio-controlled (RC) aircraft enthusiasts recently landed on the pages of the Malaysian Book of Records for building and flying the largest RC model aeroplane in the country.

The award was given to Nazrul Hisham Abd Manaf, who built and designed the aircraft, and Syed Fadley, the model’s owner.

According to local automotive site Engear, the duo spent around four months DIY-ing the miniature machine.

Measuring 2.9m in length and with a wingspan of 2.6m, the RC plane is an almost-to-scale model of the Royal Malaysian Airforce’s (TUDM) four-engine Airbus A400M passenger transport and cargo carrier – complete with its signature grey livery and TUDM decals.

The model is so huge that it stood taller than a grown man, from nose to tail.

Made from lightweight EPS foam, the plane flies with battery-powered electric motors and can stay airborne for about six minutes per flight.

Both Nazrul and Syed appears to be active members of the RC aircraft community here in Malaysia and regularly take to the skies with other hobbyists from across the country.

Here in the Klang Valley, the community is said to usually flock to the Telipot RC Flying Field in Rawang to partake in their high-flying hobby.

Taking a peek at Nazrul’s Facebook page, we found that he also helps build and customise model planes for others, by hand.

His latest creation, that we know of, is a model of a Malaysian Airlines or MASwings DHC-6 Twin Otter propeller aircraft used in domestic flights in Sabah and Sarawak.
