Malaysians are fortunate enough not to experience many natural disasters such as volcano eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes.

However, we do get small tornadoes that can still wreak havoc in the neighbourhood on rare occasions.

Just yesterday (26 January) afternoon, a tornado raged through a town in Kedah. The Inforoadblock Facebook page stated that it allegedly took place in Bukit Kayu Hitam.

A woman in the area managed to capture the chaos caused by the passing tornado. Earlier in the video, the vision was blurred by all the sand picked up by the tornado.

Debris and large items such as a plastic chair and a blue bucket were pulled by the swirling wind too.

The woman could also be seen taking a few steps back and trying to find a place to shelter from the strong winds.

Fortunately, the tornado moved away not long after and left everyone in its dusty aftermath.

According to Plex Page, Malaysia recorded 42 tornadoes happening across Kedah and Selangor in 2014, with the highest wind speed reaching 240 km/h.

What to do if you’re near a tornado?

If you find yourself near a tornado, remember to seek shelter in a sturdy building or under a heavy table.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends covering the body with a blanket, sleeping bag or mattress, and also protecting the head with anything available.

CDC also recommends avoiding sheltering in a room with windows and do not try to outrun a tornado.
