Are local cinemas sabotaging the recently released film Anwar: The Untold Story?

The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) refutes the claim made by the film’s distributor, calling it unfair.

In a statement, MAFE said they champion the growth of the local movie industry through supporting local productions including Anwar: The Untold Story.

It stressed that the movie currently has an average of 5 movie showtimes scheduled for each location and this covers 70 per cent of locations across the country.

“A wider range of showtimes are available at central cinema locations,” MAFE said.

It was reported recently that the distributor for the film, DMY Creation alleged that certain cinemas were boycotting its screening.

Datuk Mohamed Yusoff who is the chairman of DMY claimed that some cinemas refused to give slots to the movie but gave more than 40 slots to foreign films.

As reported by the New Straits Times, the movie was screened at 124 cinemas nationwide when it opened last Thursday.
