The controversial sugar dating website Sugarbook has been blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

This comes after the dating platform was mired with controversy after publishing a list of “Top 10 Sugar Baby Universities” that drew ire from both the educational institutions and government officials.

According to The Star, MCMC posted a notification on the website that indicated a violation of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA).

Section 233 of the CMA 1998 focuses on improper use of network facilities or network service, covering any comment, request, suggestion which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person, or provides any obscene communication for commercial purposes to any person.

MCMC has not officially confirmed why the website was taken down but had earlier released a statement that it is investigating Sugarbook together with PDRM.

MCMC Chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek noted that the investigation into Sugarbook will focus on whether the app is registered in Malaysia. 

Interestingly, Sugarbook is under a company called Sovrnt Ltd which is registered in Cypurs.

If the app is found to promote prostitution, then the matter will be handed over to PDRM as MCMC does not have the provisions to handle such matters.

As of time of writing, checks on the website show a notice that states “This website is not available in Malaysia as it violate(s) the National law(s).”

However, TRP’s checks also show that the website is still accessible on some devices.

An anonymous source also informed Lowyat.net that Sugarbook had sent out an e-mail to their members with directions to circumvent the MCMC block.
