On 1 May, it was reported that a 12-year-old boy in Kluang, Johor, died from suspected heatstroke.

The Health Ministry (KKM) has issued a statement to clarify that the boy died from septic shock secondary to Meningoencephalitis and not from heatstroke.

The boy was warded at Hospital Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom after experiencing a seizure. The seizure took place after the boy had a high fever a day before and was coughing for the past three days.

According to the New Straits Times, the boy was laid to rest at the Kampung Bentong Muslim cemetery.

What is meningoencephalitis?

Meningoencephalitis is an infection in the brain. According to John Hopkins Medicine, the meninges are layers of thin tissue that covers the brain and when it gets infected, it’s known as meningitis.

When the brain becomes inflamed or infected, the problem is known as encephalitis. If both the meninges and the brain are infected, the condition is called meningoencephalitis.
